All of our dogs are DNA tested through Embark Vet, a research partner of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Using the Embark for Breeders kit, we screen for:

  • Breed-relevant genetic health conditions (including Shih Tzu-relevant conditions)

  • 210+ genetic variants associated with disease and clinical tools

  • Traits testing (coat color, body size, and more)

  • DLA diversity testing

  • Breed ancestry breakdown

  • Genetic Coefficient of Inbreeding (COI) and genetic diversity COI

Embark analyzes 230,000+ genetic markers, allowing the test to detect inbreeding farther back in time, across more generations, than pedigree-based calculations.

Embark also has expertly trained veterinary geneticists on staff to help breeders and dog owners interpret results. In our experience, their geneticists and veterinarians respond quickly to questions we submit.

Because of this depth and reliability, thousands of breeders use Embark to support their breeding programs—helping improve genetic health and diversity, screen for disease mutations, and understand coat traits, among other benefits.

Embark’s DNA test results are accepted by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) for all conditions where the OFA has an established DNA registry, and are also recognized by the UK Kennel Club and many other international organizations.
